K Update

Hi All,

Life is busy in our little world this month! We're busy counting down our days and the kids are really enjoying the ABC countdown. Their jokes for "J" were fantastic!!!!!! I loved hearing them all stand up and tell them, we were all cracking up :)

Here are a few updates on academics....

Science:

We survived a visit from the 2nd grade ducks that hatched last week. The kids watched a few emerge from their eggs last week and this week they were able to visit our room and run around. Kids that wanted to were able to pet and/or hold them. I am hoping that we didn't scare the little guys too much...what a great experience it was for them to see these baby animals.

In our room, our caterpillars arrived last Friday and we are now starting to watch their life cycle. They've been here almost a week and they've already started to grow and change. We watched 2 videos about caterpillar/butterfly life cycle today. We are also tracking their growth with a butterfly journal.

Reading/Language:

This week I am doing a final running record on each child to assess their reading levels. This is taking the place of our guided reading sessions this week. Look for new books to come home again next week.

The students are writing the most amazing sentences lately! I've really be pushing them to sound out the words that they want to use to express their ideas. I am so impressed with the progress they've been making. Wow!

Math:

We are just about done with subtraction. The kids will take a test on subtraction tomorrow. Last week they really enjoyed using the Smart Board to review and practice their subtraction skills.

Religion:

On Friday we will be celebrating Mary with a May crowning ceremony. We are going to spend some time tomorrow looking a what this is and why we celebrate Mary.

Social Studies:

We are finally on our last page of the books we've been working on. Students will complete their page on "this is my planet" later this week. Look for them to come home soon.

Other news:

Permission slips went home today for our upcoming zoo field trip.

Friday students can were dress-up clothes or their uniform.

We've got a month packed with birthdays - we're celebrating all the summer birthday that we would miss over the summer.
