Happy New Year!

Here's our first update of 2012!

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable holiday season! I know it went fast in our house but we were thankful to have two long weeks of family time.

We are now settling into the 2nd half of kindergarten (we'll officially be 1/2 way later this week)! The kids are settling in again and we're are spending some time reviewing behavior expectations as a whole school. Pace groups reviewed the 3 Bees today and we will be reviewing them in class as well.

Looking ahead ~ the next "big" event to look forward to is Catholic Schools Week the last week of January and first week of February.

I am also completing the final portion of my Master's program this semester through Cardinal Stritch University. I am looking forward to completing my action research project within the classroom. My topic is guided reading/comprehension skills. Late January/early February you can look forward to more detailed information to come home about this project. I am really looking forward to working with the students in conjunction with this project.

As far as academics here's what happening in our room ~

  • *NEW* Student of the Week ~ Each Friday we will be drawing a name for the student of the week. Each child will have a chance to bring home and decorate a poster over the weekend and bring in several family photos to share the following Monday. The poster and photos will be displayed in our classroom for 1 week. The student of the week will also be our classroom leader. When your child's name has been drawn, look for the poster and a reminder note in your child's folder. The kids really enjoy doing this fun activity!
  • Reading ~ the Unit topic is families. Children will continue to explore this topic through the texts we use in our mini lessons. Our Daily 5 centers will have a few new components especially in the area of word word. The students will be doing sorting activities that review word/picture sounds. They will also be sorting word families and matching word family words to the correct pictures. This is moving more into "Words Their Way" word study and sorting. For more detailed information on the aspects of "Words Their Way" Read This Helpful Resource!
  • Math ~ we completed our graphing unit last week. Today we started our geometry unit.
  • Religion ~ we will wrap up with the Christmas season this week. We will learn about the seasons in the church year. This 1/2 of the year we will also start to focus learning/memorizing some of the basic prayers (Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be, etc.)
  • Social Studies ~ We started a mini unit on Lunar New Year today. We'll be exploring Asian cultures though this important holiday of the next few week.
  • New assessments are also going to be completed in the next 2 weeks to give you an accurate update on your child's progress. Progress reports are scheduled to go home 1/25/12.
